Energy Efficient Building Technique
Growing in Popularity
We’re stoked to announce that Black Canyon Builders is building with Murus Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the Four Corners region. SIPs panels are an extremely energy efficient building product that can replace both structural elements and fiberglass insulation used in traditional stick-frame construction. In addition to using Murus SIPs for our own construction, Black Canyon Builders can be a valuable subcontractor or supplier to other contractors in the Four Corners regions by adding design services, on-site technical assistance, and/or Murus SIPs installation services.
According to U.S. Department of Energy statistics, SIPs panels deliver 12 to 14-percent greater energy savings than traditional building techniques. In practice, homeowners typically see significant more energy efficiency.
Here’s my “official” quote from our press release: “SIPs panels, used independently or in conjunction with other building techniques, have multiple benefits. The immediate benefits are huge savings in time and labor costs. Long-term, you’re looking at an extremely energy efficient home that will save money year over year in heating and cooling costs. As an example, a SIPs panel home we built last year earned a score of 59 by an independent Energy Star auditor. This rating indicates that the home is 41-percent more efficient than a newly built home using traditional construction and insulation.”
Interest in SIPs panel construction is growing nationally as more states adopt higher standards for energy efficiency. According to Structural Insulated Panel Association, 45 states use the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as a model for their own building codes. The IECC issued more stringent standards for energy efficiency in their 2012 codes, and states are expected to follow suit. Additionally, ENERGY STAR increased its efficiency standards with the 2012 Version 3.0 guidelines.
Even in the tumultuous real estate market, evidence is mounting that consumers are seeking more energy efficient homes. The National Association of Realtors quotes builders and market research showing that consumers are demanding energy efficiency for both environmental considerations and fiscal responsibilities. Additionally, the Los Angeles Times (Aug. 29, 2011) reported that regional studies around the West show energy efficient homes sell more quickly and for higher prices than less efficient homes.
Another huge benefit of SIPs construction is the near total design flexibility. With SIPs, you’re not limited by window size or placement, stylistic and design choices (like Victorian, mountain contemporary or desert stucco/adobe), or even exterior and interior wall placement.
If you’re interested in checking out a SIPs timber frame home we’re working on right now in downtown Durango, please give me a shout (info@blackcanyonbuilders.net) to set up a meeting.
Thanks!
