Most of us can picture the classic, old timber frame barn from the turn of the 20th century and earlier. It’s unfortunate how few have been maintained in top condition. Conversely, it’s impressive how many are still standing after years of neglect. From an architectural standpoint, timber frame barns and barn homes have greatly shaped the landscape of the West.
I’m drawn to old barns, in all states of repair. My first thought usually goes to the history of the property and how the barn can be restored. For those beyond repair, I confess that my next thought is typically to salvage. I would love to get my hands on the well-worn wood and bring out the particular beauty that comes only with age.
For those building a barn today, I would strongly urge consideration of a timber frame structure. It’s the classic look and they deliver a connection to place and history like no other option. (For inspiration, click here.) As I’ve covered in my blog, timber frame construction is the most durable, wooden construction method. With minimal maintenance, it’s not unlikely to expect well over a century of use from a timber frame barn. There is no denying that a post and beam barn will be more expensive than today’s popular, metal-framed choice. If you can manage the initial investment, a timber frame barn will deliver exponentially in durability, ease of repairs (over the long-run) and aesthetic, not to mention the valuable equity.
If you’re taken by the traditional aesthetic but have no practical need for a barn, Woodhouse has developed four SmartWood® Barn Home plans. The exteriors offer a variety of classic elevations, reminiscent of barns converted into contemporary homes. The interior spaces range from open and expansive to intimate and cozy.
The Smartwood® plans are an affordable way to build your dream barn-style home. Though, if none of the four floor plans align with your vision, custom design and architecture is also available through Woodhouse.
As always, never hesitate to call me if I can answer any questions or come to your site to help choose the best design options for your land and lifestyle.
